Let there be light
Correct use of Lighting is probably the single most important aspect to obtaining good results when using any rendering program. I find that environment lighting is the simplest, most effective, form of scene lighting. However, where the featured product is a light emitter or has some light emitting components you must add additional point, or spot, lights to maintain a realistic impression.
In this tutorial I render a ‘Maglite’ style torch and turn the light on with an appropriately positioned point light. I have used all standard SE VS materials except for a small tweak at the end. I find the trick to using the standard VS materials is not to dwell too much on the description just use the material that looks the best to you. In this case I have used black plastic for the body, I am fully aware that the real thing would be powder coated or anodized aluminium.
